May 9, 2012

SPARTANBURG, SC – May 8, 2012 – The University of South Carolina Upstate is one of 27 sites across the nation to host a simultaneous Launch Party to announce the system-wide, $1 billion capital campaign, Carolina’s Promise, on Thursday. The Launch Party will be held on Thursday, May 10.

USC President Harris Pastides will appear live via satellite while other special guests assemble in the Dr. Lawrence Roël Garden Pavilion on the USC Upstate campus at 6:00 p.m. USC Upstate will announce its Carolina’s Promise: Expanding Excellence in the Upstate campaign, which has a goal of raising $50 million by 2017, the 50th anniversary of USC Upstate.

“This historic fundraising endeavor will be transformational, building on our success of creating educational opportunity, advancing discovery, and improving lives in South Carolina and beyond,” said Dr. Tom Moore, chancellor of USC Upstate.

Chris Crowley ʼ11 is a former textile executive who is serving as chairman of the campaign advisory panel. He recently announced that $24 million has already been raised, putting the institution at nearly the halfway point of its $50 million goal.

If we are going to improve the standard of living in our community, it is in our collective best interest to invest in USC Upstate,” said Crowley. “Nearly 85 percent of USC Upstate graduates stay in the region to build their lives and careers. In a lot of ways, the economic future of this community is tied to USC Upstate more so than any other institution of higher education.”
