Valenzuela joins Burnette Shutt & McDaniel
January 27, 2026A highly skilled attorney and deeply experienced litigator, Johanna C. Valenzuela has joined Burnette Shutt & McDaniel. Her practice will focus on employment law, litigation, and qui tam False Claims Act whistleblower lawsuits. Prior to entering private practice, Valenzuela spent six years in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Columbia, rising to deputy chief of the civil division. In that position, she represented the government in False Claims Act and other cases. She also led numerous investigations and served as the division’s civil rights coordinator.
Before being promoted to deputy chief, she served as an assistant U.S. attorney, representing federal agencies in trial and appellate courts. She earned numerous awards and commendations for her work.
She also served as a staff attorney for the South Carolina Senate Judiciary Committee, worked in the office of the South Carolina Attorney General, and handled hundreds of cases during her time in the Sixteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office in York County.
A U.S. Air Force veteran, Valenzuela earned her bachelor’s degree in international studies at the University of South Carolina. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
