Former DHEC Attorney Now Based in Firm’s Florence Office
CHARLESTON, COLUMBIA, FLORENCE, & GREENVILLE, SC, AND WASHINGTON, DC – April 28, 2009 – Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A. is pleased to announce Evander M. E. (Van) Whitehead has joined the Firm’s Florence office. He will concentrate on environmental, regulatory and administrative law as well as probate matters.
Prior to joining the law firm, Whitehead was a Staff Attorney for the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control in Charleston, SC, for more than four years. In this position, he defended agency decisions in administrative and judicial review, pursued enforcement actions on behalf of the agency, and consulted with agency staff on environmental law matters. He regularly appeared before the SC Administrative Law Court and worked on many cases before the SC Court of Appeals.
Anne S. Ellefson, the law firm’s Managing Director, said, Van’s experience at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Controls will be most useful to our clients. In addition to working closely with the Department’s Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management, Van worked with the Department’s Office of Environmental Quality Control in a broad range of program areas throughout the State. Van’s experience will strengthen our environmental team’s capabilities.
In 2006, he was an Adjunct Professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he presented lectures on environmental law in South Carolina. He was recognized by his alma mater in receiving the Compleat Lawyer Award from the USC School of Law in 2003.
A Florence native, Whitehead earned a J.D. from the University of South Carolina in 2003, where he was president of the Environmental Law Society and the Public Interest Law Society, Articles Editor of the SC Environmental Law Journal, and received the USC School of the Environment Award in 2003. Whitehead earned his B.S. at Davidson College in 1998. He served as a law clerk for Chief Judge Kaye Hearn on the SC Court of Appeals, and also clerked for the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control in Columbia.
Whitehead is admitted to the SC Bar, U. S. District Court, District of South Carolina, and 4th Circuit Court of Appeals.
