Verizon Wireless Keeps University of South Carolina Football Fans Connected All Season Long

August 30, 2012

COLUMBIA, SC – August 30, 2012 – Verizon Wireless has deployed a temporary cell site, known as a Cell on Wheels (COW) unit, at Williams-Brice Stadium to provide enhanced 3G and 4G LTE network and voice coverage for football season. The deployment of the COW means the tens of thousands of football fans and tailgaters will be able to talk, text, and surf the web with uninterrupted connectivity at the first home game of the season against East Carolina and throughout the entire season.

“University of South Carolina football is huge in Columbia and throughout the state, and we know there will be thousands of fans making calls to meet friends, send picture messages and browse the Internet on their wireless devices at games throughout the season,” said Frank Cairon, executive director of network for Verizon Wireless. “We invest in our South Carolina network continually, but for an ongoing event this big, we take our preparations to the next level to provide a superior wireless experience for our customers.”

Verizon’s COW unit has a 75-foot telescoping antenna and 13 dedicated voice and high-speed data channels to handle thousands of calls and data transmissions simultaneously; it will provide enhanced coverage for all regular season home games at Williams-Brice Stadium.
