Kathy Taylor, an educator with more than 30 years of experience, was appointed by South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster to serve on the Lander University Board of Trustees.

Recognized for excellence in teaching and literacy instruction, Taylor, of Union, will hold the atlarge, Seat 15, on the University’s board. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Lander in elementary education in 1995.

“As a proud graduate, I know firsthand the impact Lander can have on its students,” said Taylor, who began her career as a teacher of second- and fourth-grade students at Foster Park Elementary School in Union. “Serving in this capacity allows me to give back to the University that provided me with such a strong foundation, personally and professionally.”

In her position of leadership, Taylor said she sees her role “as a way to support and guide the institution’s continued success while helping ensure that future students experience the same sense of community, safety and opportunity that I valued so much.”

An assistant principal at several schools, Taylor was named principal at Jonesville Elementary/Middle School in 2015. The school serves students from 4K – eighth grade in Jonesville. In addition to earning two master’s degrees from Converse College, Taylor completed the South Carolina Principal Induction Program.

Lander President Richard Cosentino said Taylor brings a valuable perspective to the Board of Trustees.

As a lifelong educator and proud Lander alumna, Kathy Taylor has a clear understanding of the transformative power of education at every level,” Cosentino said. Her dedication to students and her commitment to public education make her a valuable addition to our Board of Trustees.”

Over the years, Taylor said she has been impressed with Lander’s growth while remaining true to the core values of the University.

I loved my years on campus — the strong academic programs, the welcoming environment, and the feeling of safety and community,” Taylor said. “I have admired how the University continues to expand its programs and facilities while still fostering those same values of care, excellence and student-centered learning. This balance of growth and tradition is what excites me about serving on the board and supporting Lander’s mission into the future.
