Mt. Pleasant, SC – Thomas F. Hartnett will be joining Mike Simmons, a Top Producing Realtor with Carolina One Real Estate’s Mt. Pleasant Highway 17 North office to form the Simmons Hartnett Group.

Hartnett has been a licensed Realtor® since 1963 working for more than 40 years with Hartnett Realty, a family owned brokerage founded by Harnett’s parents in 1947. Through the years, Hartnett has been active in all aspects of the real estate industry including residential, commercial, industrial and rural acreage. For many years, Hartnett specialized in real estate appraising and has been called as an expert witness in court cases involving matters of real estate disputes and litigation. Hartnett has appeared in court as a professional witness in 33 of South Carolina’s 46 counties and has appraised more than 38 of South Carolina’s historic plantations for purposes of marketing and conservation easements.
In 1964, at the age of 22, Hartnett was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives where he served for 8 years. He was subsequently elected to the South Carolina Senate for two 4-year terms. In 1980, Hartnett was elected to the US House of Representatives where he served 3 two-year terms. Hartnett was the first Republican to represent the 1st District of South Carolina in the US House since Reconstruction. Hartnett currently serves as a member of the South Carolina Legislative Audit Committee. Hartnett served as a member of The South Carolina State Ports Authority for 12 years. He also served as the State Chairman of the George H.W. Bush Presidential campaign in 1988.
In the community, Hartnett was a founding member and Board Chairman of Harbor National Bank. He is a past member of the Board of Directors of SouthTrust Bank; past President of the Breakfast Exchange Club of Charleston and past member of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. Hartnett is presently serving as a member of the Board of Directors of Roper Hospital and is a member of the Hibernian Society of Charleston and the Knights of Columbus Council 704.
A native of Charleston, Hartnett attended local schools and the College of Charleston. Hartnett and his wife Bonnie reside in Wild Dunes on the Isle of Palms and have two children and 5 grandchildren. His hobbies include golf, reading and playing the piano.
