Waldrop Mechanical Services Wins National Award from Associated Builders and Contractors for Manning Hall HVAC Renovation

Waldrop Only Specialty Contractor in Carolinas to Win a 2010 ABC Excellence in Construction Award
SPARTANBURG, SC – March 10, 2011 – Spartanburg-based Waldrop Mechanical Services, a full-service mechanical contracting firm, is the proud recipient of a prestigious national construction award from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) for its turnkey mechanical renovation of Manning Hall, a high-rise dormitory on Clemson University’s main campus. Waldrop received ABC’s Pyramid Award in the Specialty Contracting category, Mechanical: $ 2 million to $10 million. The award was presented to Waldrop on February 23, 2011, in Orlando, Florida, at ABC’s Excellence in Construction Awards celebration.
Waldrop was the only specialty contractor from both Carolinas to win a 2010 ABC Excellence in Construction Award at the national event. To be eligible, projects had to be completed by August 31, 2010, and have previously won a top award at ABC’s local chapter level. Waldrop’s Manning Hall project won the ABC Eagle Award (the highest-level regional award) from ABC of the Carolinas chapter in November 2010.
Waldrop performed the fast-track Clemson Manning Hall HVAC renovation over the 2010 summer break, completing the work in mid-August 2010. From start to finish, the project was completed in just 15 weeks (92 days). The assignment primarily encompassed construction of an all new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Waldrop’s scope of work also included demolition services, and modifications to the building’s electrical, fire alarm, fire sprinkler, interior wall/ceiling, and insulation systems.

About the Project
Originally built in 1968, Manning Hall is a 10-story concrete structure with brick veneer, framed with metal truss walls coated with plaster. Waldrop demolished the existing 2-pipe mechanical system and replaced it with a new 4-pipe chilled water/hot water system. Original ductwork was demolished and replaced throughout the building. The mechanical system is equipped with dedicated outside air units which supply individual induction (chilled beam) boxes. These induction boxes are located in each dorm room and supply both heating and conditioned air to each resident space. Common areas on both the ground and main level are serviced by a single air handler that works in conjunction with variable air volume (VAV) boxes to condition these spaces. Modifications were also made to the electrical, fire alarm, sprinkler, interior wall systems and ceiling, and new insulation was added to the new piping and duct systems.
