Wando’s yearbook staff earns Best Yearbook in the State
October 28, 2018
For the first time in Wando’s history, the high school’s yearbook, Legend, has been named the Best Yearbook in South Carolina by the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association at the Fall Conference, October 18, 2018.
Photo: Graduates Abbey Grace Byrd and Brooke Fletcher were the editors in chief of the historical volume under the leadership of English teacher Phillip Caston, who serves as the Yearbook advisor, English teacher.
Caston said the win was especially emotional on Thursday since the team dedicated this yearbook volume to Faith Dutton, one of their staff members lost in a car accident on May 19, 2017.
“Throughout the year, we reminded ourselves that we were putting our best work into this book for Faith,” Caston said. “Faith was very competitive and loved to win, so we knew she would expect nothing but the best from us. We’re overjoyed we could win it for her,” he said.
Byrd and Fletcher are both freshmen at Clemson University. Caston presented them the award at a home game last weekend.
“The Legend 2018 staff was determined to make this book our best yearbook yet; it is amazing to see all of our hard work pay off,” said Byrd. “Leading this staff was a privilege that taught me not only how to make a yearbook, but how to make my dreams a reality. I couldn’t have asked for a better family to create a “Best in State” book with.”
“Wando Yearbook is a family and program like no other,” added Fletcher. “It gave me some of the best high school memories and friends, all while giving me the opportunity to create a beautiful book three years in a row. All 40 staff members poured their all into every single aspect of the 2018 edition and deserve every bit of praise that comes their way. Being named Best in State – especially as the first in Wando High School history, is an unbelievable honor and one I will always take great pride in.”
Legend staff members also dominated the individual awards, placing in every single category:
- Ry Ulmer and Greyson Webb, Seniors, First Place: Spread Design
- Frank Jeffries, Senior, First Place: Sports Photo
- Merritt Redden, Junior, First Place: Feature Story
- Olivia Wander, Senior, Second Place: Feature Photo
- Abbey Grace Byrd and Brooke Fletcher, Second Place: Cover Design
- Legend Staff, Second Place: Theme Development
- Olivia Wander, Senior, Third Place: Candid Photo
“The pride I have for my students and their work is immeasurable. These students have accomplished so many firsts for our yearbook program and our school. This honor marks another special precedent for Wando High School,” said Caston.
