Ways and Means Chairman to study local government fund

September 25, 2017

S.C. House Ways and Means Chairman Brian White (District 6-Anderson) has appointed a special ad hoc committee of the Ways and Means Committee to study the Local Government Fund.

The committee will be chaired by Representative Leonidas E. “Leon” Stavrinakis (District 119-Charleston) and the committee will also include Dwight A. Loftis (District 19-Greenville), Michael A. “Mike” Anthony (District 42-Union), Alan D. Clemmons (District 107-Horry), J. Derham Cole, Jr. (District 32-Spartanburg), Phillip D. Lowe (District 60-Florence), and Kirkman Finlay, III (District 75-Richland).

“The Local Government Fund, like many legacy funding formulas that are written into state law, needs to be updated. It was created over thirty years ago out of a hodge-podge of special taxes, some of which no longer exist. The state should make funding decisions for state and local services based on equity, need, and merit, not math formulas,” stated Chairman White.
