We Are Sharing Hope SC highlights the healing power of tissue donation during Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October 30, 2024

We Are Sharing Hope SC (SHSC) is honoring tissue donors during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, for their decision to donate to so many women across the state of who are undergoing breast reconstruction following a cancer diagnosis.

In 2023, 157,000 women underwent breast reconstruction, with over 79,000 choosing implant-based reconstructions that utilized acellular dermal grafts derived from donated tissue.

“Tissue donation plays a crucial role in the journey of breast cancer survivors. Reconstructive surgery after a mastectomy can help survivors restore confidence and reclaim their sense of self,” said Michael Palmisano, Director of Tissue Recovery Services at SHSC. “This vital process not only aids in physical healing but also supports emotional recovery for women facing the challenges of breast cancer.”

We Are Sharing Hope SC is committed to further educating South Carolinians on the importance of becoming a donor and how their decision can have a profound impact on those in need – specifically those who are fighting against this aggressive disease.

“Tissue donation is an incredibly important gift, and we hope to bring awareness to the impact it can have on women facing breast reconstruction” said David DeStefano, President & CEO at SHSC.
