A New Voice for Georgetown County with Launch of Local Online Newspaper

By Karen Owens, Publisher

Georgetown County has a new way to stay informed, connected and engaged with the launch of Georgetown SC Gazette. This dedicated online newspaper and bi-weekly email newsletter marks a fresh chapter in how our community shares it stories, celebrates people and keeps up with the issues that matter most.

Created with Georgetown County residents in mind, our publication’s mission is simple: to deliver accurate, timely and community-centered reporting that reflects the heart of our historic city and surrounding areas. From local government updates and school news to profiles of small businesses, organizations, events and the people who make Georgetown County unique, this new platform is designed to be the voice of the community.

Let me introduce myself

While I recently made the move to Georgetown this past summer as a full-time resident, I have been regularly visiting Pawleys Island since 1991. I have always loved this part of the Lowcountry, which is why I made the decision to buy a home here nearly five years ago. I have worked in the public relations and communications arena for 38 years. Even though I recently retired from state government, I knew I still wanted to make an impact for some organization or cause. But I wasn’t sure what pathway was going to present itself.

Fortunately, some colleagues that I’ve had the privilege of working with for nearly 20 years reached out when I mentioned my relocation to Georgetown. Alan and Cheryl Cooper are publishers of the successful MidlandsBiz, LowcountryBizSC and UpstateBizSC publications, and I have collaborated with them to share news about my clients and employers through their digital publications for years.

I told them of my desire to make a positive impact on my “new” hometown, and we began discussing ideas about how to harness our expertise to do something meaningful. After a few calls and a wonderful day touring the community, they came back with an intriguing proposition – to launch a digital news site focusing on the greater Georgetown County area.

We believe the Georgetown SC Gazette will fill a void and become more than just a news site. We envision it becoming more of a community hub, sharing profiles and stories on Georgetown’s historic waterfront, growing business community, vast charitable community and much more. Georgetown deserves a news source that is vibrant and diverse as the community itself. Our goal is to highlight what makes our county special by providing space for important conversations and ensuring every resident feels represented.

Hello World

The Gazette’s online format makes the news and event coverage accessible to everyone – whether readers are checking the latest headlines from home, work or on the go. Readers will also have opportunities to contribute by suggesting story ideas, submitting community events, and even sharing their own perspectives through guest columns.

There are no subscription fees or paywalls to access the site or receive the bi-weekly emails. Readers are encouraged to visit Georgetownscgazette.com to sign up as well as follow along on social media through Facebook and Instagram for updates.

And as your local publisher, I want your feedback. Let me know if there’s a group that needs to get the word out about a special event or a fundraising drive people need to know about and support. Is there a small business that is making a difference through its philanthropic efforts or generous community spirit. How about an innovative entrepreneur who may have a solution that will change all our lives… for the better?

Thank you for taking the time to check us out! We look forward to sharing the Good News of Georgetown County with you!
