School is well underway, but if you missed out on your own back-to-school shopping never fear, there is still time to score some of the seasons most fashionable and ‘must-have’ items for kids of all ages.

Granted you will want to step-up the quality over the pieces you were sent to school with as children, the practicality, fun and nostalgia of these items will have you feeling the same excitement all over again. Here are some school favorites you can still use today:

1.    The backpack. Easily one of the most utilitarian bags on the market, and while you will want to skip the nylon cartoon character options, you can’t go wrong with a nice leather version. It’s the perfect hands-free bag that works as well during the week as on the weekend.

2.    A day planner. Remember when your life was kept in your day planner? Today most paper calendars have been replaced by smartphones, but there is something to be said about keeping a written planner. And with elegant options available you can retire your old, trusty Day Runner.

3.   New shoes. Who didn’t love getting a new pair of shoes at the start of every school year? While you don’t have to limit yourself to just one pair of sneakers to last ten months, the same principle of investment purchasing applies: find a pair with some flair that still goes with just about everything and has the quality necessary to withstand the daily wear and tear of your day.

4.    A notebook. Sticky notes are great for quick reminders and notepads are utilitarian, but when you’re in a meeting and need to jot something down, why not keep everything organized, accessible and look chic at the same time with a leather notebook? There are plenty of textured options to express your personal style that still says professional, not a student.

5.    New pencils and pens. Who knew shopping for the perfect pencils and pens could be so exhilarating, but there is just something about it that is exciting. Instead of a pack of mechanical pencils or gel pens why not opt for a professional quality fountain or ballpoint pen? It will look chic and classic when you use it to write in your planner or notebook.

6.    A desk calendar. How often are you asking someone ‘what’s the date?’ or scrambling to think two weeks ahead? Even with your phone and computer at hand, it’s much easier to glance at a desk calendar and have the entire month laid out in full view then click several buttons to pull one up. Plus they are the perfect way to add some structure, visual interest and personality to your desk.

Back-to-school shopping is all about getting organized and adding some fun new goodies to make you excited about the possibilities of the year ahead. That strategy sounds pretty universal to me. Whether it’s the office or the classroom it’s never too late to put your best foot forward.
