Young artists are invited to apply to the tuition-free S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities

The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities invites young artists from across the state to apply to the public, residential high school and summer programs for the 2018-2019 school year. As a state-funded public school, tuition is free, while students assume meal plan and residence hall fee costs. The Governor’s School for the Arts Foundation provides scholarships to cover these costs for students who have a proven financial need. Apply online or become a donor at www.scgsah.org.
Any South Carolina resident in 6th through 11th grade is eligible to apply to various age-appropriate programs in creative writing, dance, drama, music and visual arts. The application deadline is January 5, 2018, but applicants who submit a completed application by November 30, 2017, will receive an application fee waiver: http://www.scgsah.org/apply.php.
“We are seeking students who have a passion for their art, who are self-motivated, and driven to pushing their talents further in the pursuit of finding their artistic voice and, potentially, a future career in the arts,” said Dr. Cedric Adderley, Governor’s School for the Arts president.
In the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts’ residential high school program, located in Greenville, students receive pre-professional training in their art area while gaining a nationally-recognized academic education that meets the requirements for a South Carolina high school diploma. The high school serves a maximum of 242 students who are mostly juniors and seniors, with some sophomores in the dance and music departments.
“Our high school students come from all walks of life and some have had no formal arts training prior to attending the Governor’s School,” said Dr. Adderley. “When they leave here, they are formally-trained artists and scholars in the humanities, many of whom will have already been acknowledged by national organizations for their talent. They’re accepted into the best colleges, universities and conservatories in the nation, and on scholarship.” The 102 students in the graduating class of 2017 received over $36 million dollars in scholarships, breaking the school’s record.
The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ Summer Academy and Summer Discovery programs provide students with two weeks of intensive study in creative writing, drama, music and visual arts. The Discovery program serves rising 9th-grade students and will run June 17 through 30. The Academy program serves rising 10th-grade students and will run July 8 through 21.
The Governor’s School also offers a five-week Summer Dance program for 7th through 12th grade students who receive pre-professional training in classical ballet and modern dance.
