Your Fragrance – What It Says About You And Why You’re Drawn To It
June 24, 2016By Brian Maynor
Fragrances may be a taboo in the office when you have to deal with close quarters and various tolerance levels to smells, but on our own time colognes and perfumes are a regular part of daily routines.
But have you ever wondered why you’re attracted to a certain note more than others, and what that says about your personality? According to fragrance expert Les Senteurs, fragrances are very telling about who we are because the sense of smell connects directly to our emotions, bypassing rationale all together. In other words, when we select a fragrance we are brining our entire lifetime of emotional, physical and mental baggage to the table.
Here are some of the most common and popular fragrance notes and a little of what they reveal about the wearer:
1. Citrus. Clean, sharp, fresh and energetic are a few of the qualities associated with citrus scents so it’s no surprise people attracted to these tend to be athletic or at least active and therefore competitive. There are also subconscious reasons for being attracted to these notes. Mainly they help wake you up, and deliver a balance between refreshment and calm.
2. Oud. Rich, warm, smoky and musky, these fragrances evoke Middle Eastern markets and tend to be expensive. When someone is drawn to these notes they are confident and self-assured. This fragrance is all about inner strength and the quiet promise of success.
3. Floral. Rose, gardenia, lilac and lavender are popular floral scents and they are quintessentially feminine; evoking a sense of romance. This is an interesting note because it expresses something different for each gender, while the others are fairly the same. Women who wear floral scents love all things feminine and luxurious, while men who are drawn to them are confident, adventurous and secure in themselves.
There are differences between male and female floral fragrances however. Female fragrances are more purely floral, while male fragrances blend them with wood, leather or tobacco notes for a deeper undertone.
4. Gourmand. Chocolate, vanilla, coffee and spices are the most common notes associated with these fragrances, and the people drawn to them are definitely spicy. These notes evoke a sense of edibility, which naturally appeals to sensual, enquiring and sexually adventurous people.
5. Marine. Salt, clean, and a sense of the ocean; these scents evoke a sense of minimalism and freedom with an elegant and uncomplicated air. People drawn to these scents love the water and the fluidity of letting life happen around them. They tend to be open and accepting of others and don’t like to be tied down.
The clothes we wear reflect a sense of who we are, but they are nowhere near as revealing as the fragrances we choose. When we are deciding what to wear we make selections based on a host of rational decisions, but selecting a fragrance bypasses that area of the brain entirely, making their selection strictly emotional, and we all know it’s harder to control or manipulate your emotions than it is your rationale.
