“Environmental and Environmentally-Friendly Applications of Nanomaterials,” Sagacious Partners’ Science Café with Dr. Jamie Lead

March 2, 2016

Sagacious Partners’ Science Café with Dr. Jamie Lead

March 8 at Speakeasy for a free, engaging talk with a cold drink in a laidback environment

Dr. Jamie Lead, SmartState Endowed Chair and Director of the Center for Environmental Nanoscience and Risk (CENR), will join us for Science Café March 8, 2016, 6 p.m. at Speakeasy in Five Points, 711 Saluda Ave.

Nanotechnology is a technology platform with benefits in medicine, computing and more, but there are emerging pollutants whose properties and high production may result in environmental health challenges. The CENR is interested in investigating the benefits and risks of nanoscale materials, with an emphasis on the environmental and health implications they may cause.

Dr. Lead’s personal research focuses on understanding nanoscale phenomena in the environment through fundamental and applied studies. He investigates natural and manufactured nanomaterials to observe their interactions and impact on the environment, specifically, the scientific, technological, health, economic, legal and societal behaviors and effects.

Before joining the University of South Carolina and SmartState, Dr. Lead served as Director of the Facility for the Environmental Nanoparticle Analysis and Characterisation and Professor in Environmental Nanoscience, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, UK. Dr. Lead received his PhD in environmental aquatic chemistry from Lancaster University, Bailrigg, Lancaster, UK.

Dr. Lead is Editor-in-Chief of the NanoImpact journal, Honorary Professor at the University of Birmingham, UK and is a Fellow of International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), Royal Society of Chemistry (RCS) and FIoN. He has published over 160 scientific publications, edited five books and holds three patents.

Science Café is presented monthly by SmartState and managed by Sagacious Partners.
