💖 Celebrating World Kindness Day: Today and Every Day
November 12, 2025November 13 is World Kindness Day, a day that reminds us all how being kind to one another helps us make a positive impact in our lives and communities. While an act of goodwill benefits the recipients, research shows that helping others dramatically reduces stress and boosts your own emotional well-being—doing good really does do you good.
With so much divisiveness in our world today, kindness is a powerful, contagious gift we can share. We encourage you to make a difference in the Georgetown community and beyond with your kindness every day.

🎁 Choose Your Act of Kindness
Your generosity doesn’t require spending money or a major time commitment. You can choose an action based on the time you have:
Tier 1: 60-Second Kindness
These simple, quick acts instantly brighten someone’s day and improve your own outlook:
- Offer a Genuine Smile: Make eye contact and smile at passersby when you walk through a parking lot or a hallway.
- Give a Thoughtful Compliment: Offer specific praise to a co-worker, cashier, or friend.
- Become a “Bin Hero”: Take a neighbor’s empty trash or recycling bin from the curb back up to their house.
- Hold the Door: An oldie but a goodie—hold the door open for the person behind you.
Tier 2: The Gift of Time and Life
These options require a bit more planning but offer a profound, lasting impact:
- Send Gratitude: Send a genuine, handwritten thank you note or email to a co-worker, teacher, or service worker for something specific they did.
- Be a Social Media Cheerleader: Leave a positive, specific review online for a local small business you love.
- Donate Blood (The Ultimate Gift): While many acts of kindness are small, some are life-saving. If you are eligible, consider making an appointment to donate blood—it’s a single act that offers hope to patients and can help save up to three lives. You can find local drives and donation centers near Georgetown by checking with the American Red Cross or The Blood Connection.
Tier 3: Volunteer in the Georgetown Community
When you are ready to dedicate a few hours, your support is invaluable to our local non-profits:
- Georgetown EATS needs volunteers to cook and serve for its weekly lunch program (some training required).
- Georgetown LEARNS provides a vibrant teen mentoring program for area middle school students to instill confidence and provide academic support.
Martha’s House: They need help running the registers at their Thrift Store on North Fraser Street on Thursdays and Fridays or sorting through donated items.
Teach My People: Volunteer tutors are needed to help children with their homework, play academic games, or just enjoy a good book together. They help students in the first through fifth grades at McDonald Elementary School (M-F, 3:00-4:00 pm) and at their other sites in Pawleys Island and Andrews.

📢 Your Challenge: Make Kindness Contagious
Kindness is a gift you give to others, and a reward you give to yourself. It’s the simplest way we can collectively lift up our community, its people, and our vital organizations.
We encourage you to extend your kindness at least once a day, whether it’s for a family member, distant friend, elderly neighbor, or a worthwhile cause. The joy you receive from making a difference will fill your heart and improve your mental health, too.
The Georgetown Gazette Challenge: Don’t let your act of kindness end with you! Share your positive story—whether it was Tier 1, 2, or 3—with us. Send me an email at [email protected] or tag us on social media with #GeorgetownKindness so we can share your goodwill and make kindness truly contagious.
