CHA giving a final salute to Gonzales Gardens

September 27, 2017

The Columbia Housing Authority (CHA) is hosting a demolition ceremony honoring Gonzales Gardens on Wednesday, October 4 at 10 a.m. located at 1505 Garden Plaza. Local dignitaries will be speaking in remembrance of Gonzales Gardens and the first building will be coming down.

The CHA will hold an open house to anyone who would like to see the oldest public housing apartments in South Carolina – one of the first in the nation – before the demolition begins. The open house will be held on September 29 & 30 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at 1505 Garden Plaza.

“The redevelopment of Gonzales Gardens has been highly anticipated by many people in the community and the Columbia Housing Authority staff” said Gilbert Walker, CHA Executive Director. “Every resident was relocated one year ago and we are excited to finally begin demolition and start construction.”

The CHA plans to have all 30 buildings demolished by the end of December 2017. CHA, along with co-developer, Mungo Construction, is moving forward with revitalization plans with the objective of commencing new construction on the footprint of Gonzales Gardens in the spring of 2018.
