City Year Columbia 2017 Best of City Year Award

July 24, 2017

City Year Columbia, a nationwide education-focused nonprofit fueled by national service, was honored to receive ‘The Stephen G. Woodsom Best of City Year’ award from the national City Year organization. The award was accepted by City Year Columbia Vice President and Executive Director, Dr. Gail Wilson-Giarratano in Boston on July 12.

The honor is given annually to select City Year sites that have performed exceptionally against numerous organizational goals. Sites are assessed against more than 75 performance goals, including service impact, AmeriCorps Member recruitment and retention, financial health, staff development, board leadership, and stakeholder engagement. This is the first time in history, City Year Columbia has received this prestigious designation. Columbia, was selected along with seven other sites out of 28 across the country this year. The award was announced at City Year’s national Summer Academy, a week of trainings, workshops and network collaboration, in Boston during the week of July 10.

City Year bridges the gap in communities between the support that students actually need and what their schools are designed and resourced to provide. As a result, City Year helps students reach their full potential to ensure they graduate high school ready for college or career. City Year Columbia’s 24 AmeriCorps Members serve in three schools in Richland County School District One and Lexington County School District Four.
