HDR’s Gambrell honored as top 20 under 40 by the State Media Company
April 14, 2017Raven Gambrell, PE, project manager for HDR in Columbia, South Carolina, received The State Media Company’s 2017 top 20 under 40 honor for her professional and personal accomplishments in the engineering field as well as the community.
“It is an incredible honor to receive this distinction,” Gambrell says. “I am overwhelmed and humbled, and I am thankful for the support that HDR has provided throughout my journey. I am very fortunate that my current professional role ties directly to my love for the Columbia community.”
After beginning her career as a structural designer, Gambrell spent approximately 13 years increasing both her technical and management abilities. Since then, Gambrell has had increasing roles in both categories, along with a continuous demonstration of leadership. While Gambrell has dedicated much of her 15-year career to structural engineering, two years ago she accepted her current position within HDR serving as a project manager for the Richland County Transportation Penny Program. Gambrell has been with HDR for 14 years.
“Raven is most deserving of this recognition not only due to the excellent job she has done at HDR, but also the example she sets with her professionalism and dedicated spirit of serving her community,” said David Beaty, PE, HDR’s director for program management and manager of the Richland County Penny Program.
A professional engineer, Gambrell received both undergraduate and graduate degrees in civil engineering from the University of South Carolina. Following completion of graduate school, she began her engineering career as a bridge designer with HDR. Known for her excitement and enthusiasm to take on new challenges, Gambrell has been given opportunities to work on projects throughout the southeastern United States. Gambrell stays involved by participating in various professional programs such as the 2011-2012 American Council of Engineering Companies Future Leaders Program. She was also selected as a member of the Leadership Columbia Class of 2013. Through the Junior League of Columbia, Gambrell has served in numerous roles with a community focus, including co-chair for a committee dedicated to conducting short, day long projects benefiting numerous non-profit organizations throughout Columbia and the surrounding areas. She is an active member of Shandon United Methodist Church where she was a founding member of her Sunday school class and served on the planning committee for a new United Methodist Women’s circle. She is currently serving on the SUMC Children’s Council. In addition to her engineering career, Gambrell instructs fitness classes in the Columbia area. Gambrell and her husband, Scott, have two children, Sally, 8, and Jake, 6.
The State Media Company’s 20 under 40 program, started in 2004, identifies 20 rising business stars under the age of 40 who are making a difference in their communities each year. Throughout the years, the program has recognized 260 people from all professions and all walks of life.
