Three new national funders commit to 2017 Indie Grits: Visiones

Fresh off the 2016 festival, Indie Grits announced three new national funders have committed to support the 2017 festival and its theme Visiones. The National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures, the Surdna Foundation, and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts have all awarded grants to the festival, which will take place April 20-23, 2017 in Columbia, S.C.
In response to the explosive growth of the Latino community in South Carolina and across the Southeastern United States, Indie Grits will turn its focus to Latino film, culture and arts in 2017 through the theme Visiones. Visiones will explore Latino influence on Southern culture and empower Latino artists to re-define their evolving identity through film and art. Favianna Rodriguez will be attending as one of the festival’s visiting artists.
“The Warhol Foundation is pleased to support the visual arts program at next year’s festival, and we look forward to an exciting project by artist Favianna Rodriguez,” said Joel Wachs, President of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
“The Surdna Foundation is proud to support the stories and voices of South Carolina’s Latino community as one of many stunning examples of how art and culture reflects the diversity of the American South,” said Judilee Reed, Director of the Surdna Foundation’s Thriving Cultures program.
“It’s very rewarding to see our work get recognition on a national level. Indie Grits has always been about shaping new Southern culture and I think these three foundations all see how important it is to invest in artists who are making work of relevance to our evolving community,” festival co-director, Seth Gadsden said.
