Kershaw County Music Association Scholarship Competition winners announced

CAMDEN, SC — The Kershaw County Music Association (KCMA) and the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County (FAC) announce the winners of the 2016 KCMA Music Scholarship Competition. Nine talented Kershaw County music students participated in the Kershaw County Music Association’s Scholarship Competition on Saturday, February 20, 2016. The distinguished judge for the competition was Dr. Benjamin Woods, music professor emeritus at Francis Marion University in Florence, SC. He has been a guest soloist with the Florence Symphony Orchestra, the Florence Masterworks Chorus, and Orchestra, with members of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and with the South Carolina Philharmonic Orchestra.

Scholarship competitors were: Elsa Compton, flute; Kirkland Moranos, flute; Sarah Gustafson, piano; Isabel Tarte, piano; Alexander Thompson, violin; Sara Hendrix, piano; Jimmie Moran, piano; Juliana Altieri, piano and Clinton Washington, marimba. Kirkland Moranos won the Senior Scholarship of $500 to be used for future flute study. Juliana Altieri won the Junior Scholarship of $200 for additional piano instruction.
“After the competition, the competitors entertained parents and friends with a recital,” says KCMA member Cheryl Black. “The audience was delighted with the excellent performances.”
The Kershaw County Music Association is an affiliate of the Fine Arts Center of Kershaw County and one of its founding member clubs. It was formed to encourage, support and promote young musicians and to foster knowledge and appreciation of quality music in Kershaw County. In addition to the coordination of the competition and recital, the KCMA performs both a fall and spring Choral Showcase, as well as a Member/Guest Showcase in the spring. The KCMA also provides other opportunities for students and adults to perform; assists with the FAC’s School Arts Performance Series, the FAC Chamber Music concerts and the Chamber Choir of Kershaw County concerts.
