“Preventing Another Fukushima: The Creative Challenge of Safety” Sagacious Partner’s Science Cafe with Dr. Ted Besmann

November 9, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – An expert in nuclear science and technology, and SmartState Chair in the General Atomics Center for Transformational Nuclear Technologies, Dr. Ted Besmann will lead Science Cafe’s discussion on “Preventing Another Fukushima: The Creative Challenge of Safety,” November 10, 2015, 6:00 p.m. at Speakeasy in Five Points.

After a massive earthquake and tsunami caused the nuclear plant accident at Fukushima, it has become important to make sure nuclear energy is a safe technology. To do so, multiple plants are taking on creative approaches. Dr. Besmann will discuss the future ideas of nuclear power technology, along with the history and reflection on the accidents at Three Mile Island and Fukushima.

Dr. Besmann is a graduate of New York University, where he received his B.E in chemical engineering, Iowa State University, where he received his M.S. in nuclear engineering and Pennsylvania State University where he received his PhD in nuclear engineering.

Past employment includes Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where Dr. Besmann was a part of the fuel thermodynamics group, a Distinguished Member of the Research Staff while holding a joint position in the Nuclear Engineering Department at the University of Tennessee. In 2014, he accepted a position at the University of South Carolina’s Nuclear Engineering Program where he continues to hold the SmartState Chair in the General Atomics Center for Transformational Nuclear Technologies.

Dr. Besmann’s current research focuses on nuclear fuel analysis and high temperature materials for energy production. He has written more than 150 journal articles and holds eight nuclear technology patents.

Science Café is presented monthly by SmartState and managed by Sagacious Partners.
