The Pops Series: At the Movies with the SC Philharmonic at Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College, April 11, 2015

April 8, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Slip into the scenes of Old Hollywood with At the Movies, a family-friendly evening filled with unforgettable movie scores and soundtracks from your movie house favorites, performed by the S.C. Philharmonic on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 7:30 p.m. This will be the final show of the 2014-2015 signature performing arts season at Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College.

With selections ranging from the heart-wrenching melodies of the blockbuster film Titanic and the beloved harmonies of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, to the hair-raising scores of The Lord of the Rings and the iconic beats of Star Wars, the audience is guaranteed an evening brimming with chills, smiles and nostalgia. Other hits audience members will be sure to recognize include themes from Dr. Zhivago, E.T., Pirates of the Caribbean and more.

Music Director Morihiko Nakahara and orchestra were featured in a new, three-show ‘Pops Series’ this year at Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College. This series is returning for the 2015-16 performing arts season, launching this fall. The increase in S.C. Philharmonic shows reflects a growing audience demand.

“Audience response to our previous shows with the S.C. Phil has been overwhelmingly positive,” says Katie Fox, Executive Director at Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College. “Expanding the series gives our audience more of what we know they love, while providing further opportunities for excellent professional musicians based in the Midlands.”
The Pop Series’ first installment, Beloved Broadway in October 2014, featured the SC Philharmonic’s take on treasured show tunes from Broadway, pulling from classics like Les Miserables, Fiddler on the Roof, Mamma Mia! and more. The annual Holiday Pops concert in December 2014 was the second show in the series, selling out in September, months in advance. Harbison Theatre patrons were offered the option to buy the Pops Series Package for a chance to grab the same seats for each show in the series.

“You can feel the music in our space. It’s a completely new experience, even for folks who regularly attend the SC Phil’s Masterworks Series at the Koger Center,” notes Fox. “You’re so close – you can read the expressions on the musicians’ faces and feel the vibrations of the chords.”
