The Cliffs expands Cycling Program with Bobby Julich and Christian Vande Velde
October 25, 2018The Cliffs announced that Bobby Julich and Christian Vande Velde have joined The Cliffs’ team of cycling guides. They will work with current director of cycling, George Hincapie, to expand The Cliffs’ cycling program through educational roundtable discussions, skill clinics, group rides and more.
Julich finished third overall in the 1998 Tour de France. He is best known for his expertise in the time trial–one that brought him overall wins at Paris-Nice, the Eneco Tour and Criterium International, as well as a silver medal in the 2004 Olympic Games time trial.
Vande Velde retired from racing in 2013. His many accomplishments include: 2008 Team Time Trial victory at the Giro d’Italia, where he become only the second American ever to don the coveted maglia rosa; 2011 Tour de France Team Time Trial win and Best Team victory; two-time top 10 Overall Tour de France finisher (2008 and 2009); 2012 overall win at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge.
“The winding mountain roads in and around our seven communities are a cyclist’s dream and it’s no wonder a growing number of our members are interested in the sport,” says Vance Ferrigno, The Cliffs Exercise Physiologist and former USA Cycling Coach. “We are ecstatic at this opportunity to offer an unparalleled cycling program — where else in the country can you ride and learn from such a collection of legendary cyclists?”
Julich and Vande Velde, together with Hincapie and Ferrigno, are working to develop a robust program and calendar of events, clinics and rides for cyclists of all levels within The Cliffs’ communities.
