Habitat Greenville raises walls on 2017 Women’s Build home

On Thursday, Greenville women business leaders, government officials and volunteers kicked off the 2017 Women’s Build by raising the walls of the home they are building for the newest resident of the Simpsonville community, future homeowner Talaya Holland and her son.
The 2017 Women’s Build brings together women from across all business sectors and experience levels to fundraise and build a home with Habitat for Humanity of Greenville County. Each woman participating in the build commits to donating both time and money to complete the construction of the home. Up to 300 women will volunteer in Habitat Greenville’s 2017 Wbuild.
The Women’s Build is a national initiative of Habitat for Humanity that empowers women to help families build strength, stability and independence, while also learning construction skills. In addition to this build, Habitat Greenville also participates in National Women’s Build Week, held each year in the spring.
As a Habitat Greenville program participant, Talaya Holland will complete 25 hours of homeownership education classes as well as 200 hours of “sweat equity,” building her home and the homes of other Habitat homeowners. She will pay an affordable mortgage for the home.
Thursday’s wall raising is a significant milestone in the Holland family’s journey to home ownership. During the event, sponsors, partners, and volunteers have the opportunity to write encouraging messages to the family on the beams of the wall, which will then become part of the home during construction.
