Tacos n’ Tequila Fiesta to debut this week in Greenville

April 3, 2017

Sixteen Upstate restaurants will be serving up their best recipes at the first Tacos n’ Tequila Fiesta at The Old Cigar Warehouse this weekend.

Presented by Lunazul 100% Agave Tequila, this food and drink celebration will occur on Sunday, April 9 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at The Old Cigar Warehouse, 912 S. Main Street, Greenville.

Local bartenders and chefs will go head-to-head and create the best tasting, custom cocktails and tacos that the Upstate has ever experienced in the Bartender Battle and Chef’s Taco Challenge. Restaurants taking part include: Willy Taco, Tipsy Taco, Toss Pizza, Up on the Roof, White Duck Taco Shop, Tin Lizzy’s, Sticky Fingers Ribhouse, Liquid Catering, Restaurant 17, Breakwater, Gringo’s Cantina, Ink & Ivy, Ji-Roz, Nacho Taco, Papi’s Tacos and NoseDive.

A trio of local judges — Brianna Shaw, executive director of  Euphoria; Josh Streetman, head barman Motor Supply Co. Bistro; and Logan Brown, producer with GVLToday — will vote on the best taco, the best sidekick (side dish or dessert), and the best cocktail using Lunazul 100% Agave Tequila. The event will also feature a costume contest, nacho game zone, live music and more.

Tammy Johnson, High Spirits Events’ chief executive officer, said she came up with the idea for the festival after seeing the explosion in tequila interested in the Upstate. A native Texan, Johnson is a pro at finding good tacos, but said even she was surprised by the interest in the event. High Spirits Events sold more than 100 tickets the first day they went on sale.

“I have been involved in a lot of events in Greenville, but we have never seen as much as buzz as we have had for Tacos n’ Tequila,” Johnson said.

One of the key partners in the event is Lunazul.

“Lunazul Tequila is a proud sponsor of Greenville’s only Taco n’ Tequila Festival and we look forward to handcrafting 100% agave cocktails to please every palate,” said Reid Hafer, Lunazul Senior Brand Manager. “Lunazul is a standout brand that prides itself on its unique heritage, commitment to quality, and smooth taste from the first sip on.”

Tickets can be purchased at www.tacotequilafiesta.com. VIP tickets are already sold out, while the general tickets are $40 in advance and $50 day of and include eight tequila tasting tokens and unlimited tacos.

All attendees must be 21 years of age or older and have ID on them to enter the event. In addition to the drink tickets, there will be cash bars on site.

“We are looking forward to a great Sunday afternoon where people can enjoy Lunazul and tacos,” she said. “Greenville’s food scene has definitely changed in the seven years I have lived here. People want higher quality and they want something different. Tacos n’ Tequila is that.”
