September 5, 2017Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes is pleased to announce Dr. Harold Ivan Smith as the speaker for the 16th annual grief seminar that will take place on September 26th and 27th at the TD Convention Center in Greenville. The three seminar series is a public outreach project sponsored by Thomas McAfee Funeral Homes that aims to provide a resource to those experiencing grief in their personal and professional lives.
Dr. Harold Ivan Smith, who teaches continuing education courses across the country, will speak at the two day event, which helps attendees understand how to cope with death and bereavement. Smith is recognized as a Fellow in Thanatology by the Association for Death Education and Counseling and is a member of the faculty of the American Academy of Grief/CMI. He has served on the Board of the Association for Death Education and Counseling and serves on the board of the Grief Support Network in Kansas City. Smith also teaches an innovative course, Grief in the Workplace, at Mid-America University in Kansas. His primary research is on the griefs of the U.S. Presidents and First Ladies, particularly during their White House Years. His newest book, Eleanor: A Spiritual Biography was just released this spring.
The seminar begins on Tuesday, September 26th with “Assisting Grievers in the Community” from 3:00pm – 5:00pm. This seminar is geared towards school professionals, teachers, nurses, social services, clergy and administrative staff.
Designed specifically for the general public, Smith will present “How Long Does Normal Grief Last” on September 26th from 6:45pm – 9:00pm. This seminar is designed to provide coping mechanisms for anyone experiencing stress in their life as a side effect of the death of someone close to them. This seminar is also appropriate for those who wish to help a friend or family member who is experiencing grief or loss in their life.
On Wednesday, September 27th, Smith will present the professional caregivers’ workshop “If I Were Grieving Right Should I Be Done by Now”. This six hour workshop, which takes place from 8:30am – 4:00pm, will explore “getting into” grief rather than “getting over” it. This session is designed to help professional caregivers interested in furthering their knowledge of the process of dying, grief and healing. Funeral directors, social workers, nurses and chaplains will receive six continuing education hours for attending this session.
