SCTAC Airport undergoes 5.1 M upgrade

Thanks to $5.1 million in federal grant funding, the S.C. Technology and Aviation Center (SCTAC) in Greenville, S.C. will repave the main taxiway at Donaldson Field airport to support larger aircraft. The non-commercial general aviation airport is recognized as a major aircraft maintenance and modification center providing everything from major repairs to routine inspections. Other uses include air charters, hangar and tie-down rental, flight lessons, pilot and aircraft supplies.
The taxiway is the main connector to and from the general aviation hangars and fixed base operator (FBO) areas, which provide maintenance and other aircraft services. The airfield accommodates a wide variety of aircraft from single engine piston planes to business jets to military cargo planes.
“Taxiway Alpha is a crucial piece of infrastructure at Donaldson Field and has not been repaved since its original construction in 1942,” says SCTAC Chief Operations Officer Danny Moyd. “Once complete, the strength of the taxiway will allow us to accommodate larger aircraft.”
Construction is expected to begin in the next 60 days and take approximately 6 months to complete. The $5.1 million awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), is funding the design and construction of the project. It is one of 72 projects receiving a total of $162.4 million in airport infrastructure grants from the FAA.
U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao explains, “The Airport Improvement Program helps to maintain our aviation infrastructure and supports safety, capacity, security and environmental improvements. This is an important investment in these airports and the economic vitality of their respective communities.”
