Spartanburg Water celebrates Drinking Water Week
May 8, 2017Spartanburg Water, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and water professionals across North America kicked off Drinking Water Week with the theme “Your Water – To Know it is to Love It.”
The national focus will celebrate Drinking Water Week by recognizing the vital role water plays in our daily lives. Spartanburg Water’s focus this week is on our Choose Tap program, part of the national Way to Wellville initiative to encourage area residents to not only change the conversation about tap water, but to meet people where they are with tap water, in the community.
“You may have seen our Choose Tap bottle refill station on Morgan Square in downtown Spartanburg or heard about the refill stations we’ve installed at Spartanburg High School with help from our partners in District 7,” said Spartanburg Water CEO Sue Schneider. “Or you could be one of the more than 5,000 who have signed a Choose Tap pledge either online, at your place of business or at a community event with our Choose Tap Oasis.”
The Choose Tap Oasis is a mobile water station designed and built by Spartanburg Water team members as an inexpensive way to enjoy cold, refreshing, local tap water without having to buy bottled water. You’ll find the Oasis at events like Earth Day, the recent Criterium bike event and the upcoming Community Health Awareness Day on June 3 at Mount Moriah Baptist Church.
A majority of pre-packaged water is sold in individual bottles, and the costs quickly add up when you crunch the numbers in gallons. According to the Beverage Marketing Corporation, if you buy a gallon’s worth of bottled water in the average-sized 16.9-ounce bottles traditionally found in the marketplace, that same water costs you $7.57 per gallon. That’s 3,785 times more than you’d pay for the same amount of water from the tap in your home.
“Our Choose Tap program is the answer to the question, ‘how can I get to know and love’ tap water,” Schneider said. “It’s pretty simple, really; Choose Tap over bottled water at home, in the workplace, or wherever you are. You’ll save money, go easier on the environment and enjoy great-tasting water.”
