Clemson University’s John Alexander honored for university foundation investing

April 25, 2016

John Alexander, professor of finance and chief investment officer for the Clemson University Foundation, is a recipient of the prestigious 2016 Institutional Investor Award presented by Institutional Investor magazine.

The award, to be presented May 19 in New York City, recognizes U.S. institutional investors whose innovative strategies and fiduciary savvy resulted in impressive returns in 2015. Alexander is among several top institutional investors, money managers and research analysts who will be recognized.

Alexander was selected as a 2016 Institutional Investor winner in the small endowment category. Nominees are judged on performance, innovation and risk management.

“To have this kind of international recognition is a great compliment to the investment committee, investment staff and the foundation at large,” Alexander said. “It’s a jewel in our crown that we proudly accept.”

The Clemson endowment has more than $550 million in assets under management. In the last five years, the foundation’s returns ranked in the top 10 percent of its peer groups. The Clemson University Foundation is unique in that, unlike many smaller college foundations that often rely completely on a consultant, Clemson employs its own internal modeling for strategic and tactical asset allocations.

Alexander is Breazeale Professor of Investments at Clemson, where he teaches finance investments and finance at graduate and undergraduate levels. He has been chief investment officer for the Clemson University Foundation since 2005.

The 2016 award is Clemson’s highest recognition to date by Institutional Investor. In 2013, the Clemson endowment was one of four schools considered for the Foundation & Endowment Money Management Investment Award for Small Non-Profit of the Year.

Institutional Investor magazine, one of the world’s premier financial publications, reports on institutional asset management, capital markets and those people and companies who are transforming international finance.
