Smith Moore Leatherwood elects four attorneys to partnership

Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP is pleased to announce that attorneys Amber R. Duncan, M. Kevin McCarrell, Matthew P. Stone and John P. Zimmer have been elected to the firm’s partnership effective January 1, 2016.  The new additions bring the total number of partners to 102, across North Carolina, South Carolina and Atlanta.

Stone is a member of the firm’s transportation practice group and maintains his focus on resolving motor vehicle liability claims against companies, drivers and insurers in the transportation industry. He represents motor carriers, specialty haulers, bus lines and motor coaches, waste haulers, mobile cranes and emergency and non-emergency transportation providers. He has extensive experience handling claims from the on-scene investigation through trial and appeals and has been named a “Top Rated Lawyer” in Transportation by Corporate CounselThe National Law JournalThe American Lawyer, and The Daily Report.

 

Charlotte, N.C.

Duncan is a member of the firm’s corporate group practice and focuses her practice on helping highly regulated businesses comply with advertising, tax, licensing and securities issues. She advises public and private corporations, banks and other financial institutions on sophisticated business transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, tender offers, private placements and corporate restructurings.  She also advises clients in the tobacco product and alcoholic beverage industries on federal and fifty-state compliance with laws restricting the manufacturer, distribution and advertising of alcoholic and tobacco products.  Duncan is the past Co-Chair of the Ronald McDonald House’s Young Professional Society.  She is a recent graduate of the NCBA Leadership Academy and serves on the Cornell University and Wake Forest University alumni associations.

Dr. Zimmer is a member of the firm’s intellectual property practice group and focuses on various patent-related matters, including patent prosecution and counseling in the chemical and materials science areas. He also has experience in medical imaging and semiconductor device design and fabrication. Dr. Zimmer has advised clients in the fields of chemistry, materials science, nanoscience, biotechnology, bioengineering, medical imaging, medical devices, solar energy, telecommunications, and mechanical engineering. He received his doctorate in chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Dr. Zimmer was selected for inclusion in North Carolina Super Lawyers–Rising Stars Edition 2014 and 2015, and was selected by the Charlotte Business Journal as a 2015 “40 Under Forty” award winner.

McCarrell is a member of the firm’s litigation group, focusing on commercial litigation with an emphasis on creditors’ rights and bankruptcy. He has experience representing banks and other financial services companies in mortgage foreclosures, debt collection, defending consumer suits, and protecting creditors’ rights in bankruptcy, as well as representing business clients in contract disputes and business torts. McCarrell was named to Greenville Business Magazine’s 2015 “Legal Elite.”
