SPARTANBURG, SC – Chapman Cultural Center is home to a high concentration of cultural activity in Spartanburg, from musicals and historical lectures to art exhibitions and children’s science camps. For the month of September, the Center will host a number of events, exhibitions, and classes in art, dance, history, music, theatre, and science. Spartanburg Music History | through Nov. 1
Spartanburg Regional History Museum at Chapman Cultural Center will continue its locally curated exhibition Spartanburg Music History through Nov. 1. Learn about Spartanburg’s role in producing nationally acclaimed musicians, historic venues, and more. Museum hours are Tuesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Free. Pot Boiler exhibition | through Sept. 17
Spartanburg Art Museum (SAM) is exhibiting playful works by nine contemporary artists entitled Pot Boiler at Chapman Cultural Center through Sept. 17. This exhibition includes a collection of images and objects that range from surreal photographs of toys to large installations, including performance-based work that allows patrons to participate. Pockets: For Safekeeping exhibition | through Oct. 8
NOURISH, a program of Mental Fitness, Inc., presents an interactive art installation in its space at Chapman Cultural Center called Pockets: For Safekeeping through Oct. 8. Patrons are invited to deposit various “tidbits,” such as ideas, to-do lists, wishes, and secrets, into the pockets on display. Gallery hours are Monday–Friday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Free. Artists’ Guild exhibition: Chess Themed Show | Sept. 1-28

42nd Annual Juried Exhibition | Sept. 1 – Oct. 9
Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg exhibits 48 works by artists of North and South Carolina in its 42nd Annual Juried Exhibition, held at West Main Artists’ Co-Op, opening Tuesday, Sept. 1 and running through Oct. 9. Chapman Cultural Center will display a collaborative exhibition of student artwork from Spartanburg County School Districts 4 and 7 in its Student Galleries located on both floors of the Carlos Dupré Moseley Building, Sept. 3-Oct. 25. 1Spark! 2015 | Sept. 5
Chapman Cultural Center will celebrate the arts and entrepreneurship of Spartanburg on Saturday, Sept. 5, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., in one explosive event: 1Spark!, a festival where creativity and innovation collide. Held between the campuses of Chapman Cultural Center and The George, 1Spark! is a festival combining inventors and entrepreneurs with art and entertainment. Participants will meet some of the area’s most promising new businesses and innovators, browse regional artisans’ wares, enjoy music and dance, and indulge in great food and drink. Art School Exhibition and Open House | Sept. 5
Spartanburg Art Museum (SAM) staff and Art School instructors at Chapman Cultural Center are hosting an afternoon of art, demos, and fun on Saturday, Sept. 5, 1-5 p.m. Learn about the Art School and the classes and workshops offered year round. Expert instructors will demonstrate a variety of techniques taught in their classes, from ceramics to watercolor, portrait, oil painting, and more. Artwork by local students and artists associated with SAM’s Art School will be on exhibit. There will be special hands-on activities for children and opportunities to register early for fall classes. Sundays Unplugged | Sept. 6, 13, 20, 27
Chapman Cultural Center is open every Sunday with causal, cultural entertainment and live music,1-5 p.m., as part of its weekly Sundays Unplugged program. Spartanburg Art Museum, Artists’ Guild of Spartanburg, the Student Galleries, and Spartanburg Regional History Museum are all open with free admission, 1-5 p.m. Spartanburg Science Center is also open with a small admission charge. Join Spartanburg Art Museum (SAM) invites the public to learn how to create a small sculpture inspired by artist Dylan Collins, as seen in its current Pot Boiler exhibition, on Sunday, Sept. 13, 1-4 p.m., during its monthly SAM Family Programming. This event takes place in the 2D Studio of SAM’s Art School, located on the 2nd floor of Chapman Cultural Center’s Montgomery Building. Auditions: Of Mice and Men | Sept. 13-14
The Spartanburg Little Theatre will hold auditions for the stage adaptation of the beloved John Steinbeck classic Of Mice and Men. The Greenhouse Business Incubator at USC Upstate’s George Dean Johnson, Jr. School of Business and Economics will present conversations about innovation over the years with live music, beer, and BBQ on Monday, Sept. 14, starting at 4:30 p.m. Three legendary innovators – founder of HICCup Esther Dyson, inventor of the first computer modem to connect PCs to the Internet Dennis Hayes, and founder of one of the first Internet firewalls David Pensak – will share Chapman Cultural Center’s stage, 5-6 p.m., for a panel-style discussion. Hub City Empty Bowls Soup Day | Sept. 26
Join Hub City Empty Bowls hosts its annual Soup Day fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 26, 11 a.m.-4 p.m., in the theater lobby at Chapman Cultural Center. Citizens may choose from more than 1,000 bowls, created over a period of three months by members of the community, for a $15 donation each and then enjoy unlimited gourmet soup provided by local restaurants. Proceeds will be donated to TOTAL Ministries, a charity dedicated to feeding local citizens and fighting food scarcity.
