Nominations Open for 2015 James F. Barker Ethics in Action Award

May 9, 2015

CLEMSON, SC – Clemson University’s Rutland Institute for Ethics has opened nominations for its annual James F. Barker Ethics in Action Award. The purpose of the award is to recognize and celebrate action that exemplifies integrity and, in a continuing and constructive way, encourage commitment to ethical conduct and the value of integrity. Nominations will be accepted until 5 pm on Wed., June 10, through the Rutland Institute’s website at www.clemson.edu/ethics.

“In our call for nominations, we are casting the net statewide and we expect the nominees will be of the highest caliber,” said Daniel E. Wueste, Ph.D. and director of the Rutland Institute for Ethics.  “We especially want to encourage business leaders across South Carolina to take this opportunity to recognize one of their own with this special distinction. Dedication to the value of integrity ought to be recognized and celebrated, because doing so shows we believe it’s important and because it can spur ethical aspiration and action.”

Criteria for Selection

Recipients will be recognized for action(s) and significant accomplishment(s) that reveal deep and sustained commitment to ethical conduct and the value of integrity. Nominations will include a narrative description of the action(s) and accomplishment(s) that prompt the nomination and be supported by independent references (i.e., sources in addition to the person submitting the nomination).

Method of Selection

A subcommittee of the Rutland Institute for Ethics Advisory Board – to include the director of the Institute as well as other persons designated by the RIE Advisory Board – will select the award recipient in June. The recipient will be notified immediately and publicly announced.

Background

In 2014, the Rutland Institute for Ethics Advisory Board decided to name the Institute’s highest honor after James F. Barker, the 14th president of Clemson University, in recognition of the ways he has exemplified integrity, thereby bringing ethics into focus in the best possible way: by living it. The James F. Barker Ethics in Action Award is an ongoing and constructive way to recognize and encourage commitment to ethical conduct and the value of integrity. Barker himself received the inaugural Ethics in Action Award in 2014.

Details of the nomination process are listed here, or by visiting the Rutland Institute’s website (www.clemson.edu/ethics). Specific questions relating to nominating may be directed to Dr. Dan Wueste, via email or by calling (864) 656-2858.

The 2015 James F. Barker Ethics in Action Award recipient will be announced in the early fall, and honored at a dinner on Oct.22.
