Duke Energy names Selim Bingol chief communications officer

December 1, 2014

CHARLOTTE, NC – Duke Energy has named Selim Bingol senior vice president and chief communications officer, effective Jan. 5, 2015.

Bingol will be responsible for directing Duke Energy’s communications strategy and services, including internal and external communications support for business units, media relations, executive communications, brand management and digital communications.

“Selim is a veteran communications executive ideally suited to help Duke Energy lead in a changing industry,” said Jennifer Weber, executive vice president of External Affairs and Strategic Policy. “His rich experiences at General Motors and AT&T will make him a strong partner to our leadership team as we navigate the road ahead, introduce new products and services and work every day to deliver affordable, reliable and increasingly clean energy to our customers.”

Bingol most recently served as senior vice president at General Motors where he had overall responsibility for GM’s global communications, including global products and brands, corporate media relations, public policy, executive support and internal communications. During his tenure, the company emerged from bankruptcy and the “Government Motors” era, returned to the public equity markets in the largest IPO in history at the time and made the historic transition to the first female CEO of a global automaker.

In his previous corporate role, he was senior vice president of corporate communications for AT&T, leading the public relations organization of what was then the world’s largest telecom company through one of the most dynamic periods in its history. This included multiple mergers and acquisitions and the launch of DSL and U-Verse services. He also has extensive experience as senior vice president and senior partner with Fleishman-Hillard, a global public relations firm.

Bingol, 54, graduated from the University of Virginia where he received his BA in government and foreign affairs. He and his family currently live in Detroit.
