Legacy Charter School Welcomes New Assistant Athletic Director
July 15, 2013
GREENVILLE, SC – July 15, 2013 – Legacy Charter School is pleased to announce the addition of LaCheryl Smith, of Fountain Inn, SC, as Assistant Athletic Director and Parent/Title 1 Coordinator for the school’s middle and high school Parker campus. In this role, Smith will oversee all female sports, fundraising, and NCAA Clearinghouse applications.
Legacy Charter School is a K-12 school with a vision to offer a rigorous and relevant educational program leading to college graduation and empowering underserved urban students to become productive, fit, principled citizens in a changing society.
Smith joins Legacy with 17 years of athletic coaching experience, most recently at Furman University where she was responsible for recruiting, fundraising, academics, alumni interaction, and post player development in her role as assistant coach.
Prior to her work at Furman, Smith served as head coach and athletic fundraising director at Southern Wesleyan University and served one season as an assistant coach at Greenville’s Southside High School. This followed a five year tenure at Simpsonville’s Hillcrest High School where Smith led the Lady Rams to five consecutive state playoff appearances. Additionally, Smith was selected to serve as coach of South Carolina’s 2005 North/South All-Star Game.
I am thrilled to join the Legacy Charter Family, “states Smith. “Legacy Charter is an outstanding school that prides itself on developing great student-athletes. As a former teacher, I am excited to be a part of an athletic program that emphasizes academics first. I’m also excited to work alongside a great athletic director and friend, Coach B.J. Jackson.
Smith began her coaching career in 1996 as an assistant coach at Southern Wesleyan, her alma mater. From there Smith moved to nearby West Oak High School, where she served as an assistant coach for one season before being promoted to head coach in 1999. A year later she obtained the title of Region Coach of the Year. Smith directed her program to two playoff appearances prior to taking the head coaching position at Hillcrest. Smith’s coaching and administrative experience also includes a 10-year tenure as a camp counselor at the University of North Carolina women’s basketball camp, coordinator of Greenville’s Potential Sports Academy, and a 13-year run as director of South Carolina’s Lady Flames AAU Program.
Smith received both her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education/Early Childhood Development and her Master of Arts degree in Education from Southern Wesleyan University.
