Workshop Generates Ideas for Transit Oriented Development Strategy

GREENVILLE, SC – May 7, 2012 – On Thursday evening, as part of the Connections for Sustainability project, the City hosted a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) workshop, which provided property owners, businesses, developers and the general public with information on the benefits of TODs, such as increased housing and transportation options, expanded economic development opportunities and walkable communities.
Attendees worked with consultants from HDR Engineering, Inc. and the Center for Neighborhood Technologies (CNT) to generate ideas that will be used to create a TOD strategy. The goal of the TOD strategy will be to identify ways to incorporate transit into existing and future development in Greenville’s west side, as well as along a potential bus rapid transit route from the CU-ICAR campus to the Amtrak station in downtown Greenville.
The TOD strategy will inform an ongoing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) study being conducted by HDR Engineering.
A follow-up transit analysis meeting will be held May 31 at the West Greenville Community Center, where HDR consultants will reveal their initial findings to the public. In addition, residents and other stakeholders will have the opportunity to provide input on the Connections for Sustainability housing strategy on June 7.
Connections for Sustainability is a comprehensive planning effort aimed at establishing connections between affordable housing, transportation options, economic development opportunities and open space throughout the city, with a focus on Greenville’s west side. The study is funded through grants awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), along with other local and federal contributions. Anticipated outcomes of the study include a citywide housing strategy, a feasibility study for a bus rapid transit route and transit oriented development and a comprehensive plan to guide the future growth of Greenville’s west side.
