INMAN, SC – Hollywild Animal Park will host its annual International Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, March 24th, 2012.
For the March “Sneak Preview” discounted admission rates (Adults $10; Senior citizens, children (2-14), and handicapped individuals $8) park visitors will receive even more than the opportunity to connect with wildlife from around the world. Included in admission are special presentations from Mr. Stuart Jones, The Serpent’s Advocate, who will introduce visitors to several kinds of snakes and allow the brave to hold them. He will also take time to explain the value of snakes within the ecosystem and give tips for identifying venomous snakes and nonpoisonous snakes in the wild. His shows will be held at 11AM and 1PM.
For an additional $2 per person, Joey Poole will lead guided tours of the park, giving visitors the ‘behind the scenes’ stories of the many different animals found in the walking area of the park. Tours will begin at 10 AM and 2 PM.
Representatives from PAWS, Inc will have rescued birds on hand and give visitors a chance to learn how to properly interact with animals found in the wild.
Free crafts and information displays will also be available.
“We host International Earth Day each year to highlight Hollywild’s dedication to world conservation. Though we celebrate it on this one day with the rest of the world, conservation and education are a key part of what Hollywild is all about every day,” said Linda M. Poole, program director.
Why is this a March event? Across the world, many will celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd but others choose to celebrate International Earth day on the day of the vernal equinox, which is the date used by the United Nations. For 2012, this happened at 1:41 AM Eastern Daylight Time on Tuesday, March 20th. The basic idea behind a March celebration (usually falling on the first day of Spring (U.S.) is that it correlates to the date that the length of the day is equal to the length of night all around the world as the sun passes directly over the equator. Though technically there is a variation on the idea depending on where you stand around the world at specific moments on the day, the main idea is one of unity across the globe, to benefit the world.
