GREENVILLE, SC – February 1, 2012 – Greenville Technical College and the college’s Recycling and Sustainability Coalition with the assistance of Keep Greenville County Beautiful are kicking off a nationwide recycling initiative known as RecycleMania on February 8.

RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. The event is designed to achieve two main goals: educate the community about recycling and change individual behavior that will ultimately make a difference in sustainability of the campus and community. More than 532 colleges and universities are participating.

Through the RecycleMania competition, the college will record totals in four main categories of recycling and trash data including recyclables per capita, total recyclables, trash per capita, and recycling rate.

On February 8, Greenville Tech kicks off RecycleMania with a Garbology event. Garbage generated in one day from one campus building will be sorted by students to pull out recyclables. Last year, in 50 bags of garbage, 30 percent was recyclable that had been tossed in the trash and was headed to the landfill. This year, the group hopes to see improvement in that rate.

A second event will be held on March 14. The Recycle Olympics will be a series of fun activities using recyclable materials such as an obstacle course. Students can compete while they learn more about recycling.
