The Woodlands at Furman Challenge announces 2012 schedule

GREENVILLE, SC – January 10, 2012 – The Woodlands at Furman, a seniorliving community located in Greenville, will start the second year ofthe Woodlands at Furman Challenge with the Green Valley Road Race inFebruary.

The Woodlands at Furman Challenge was started in 2011 in conjunction with the Greenville Track Club as a way to promote physical fitness amongst Upstate residents age 65 and older. More than 150 seniors took part in Greenville Track Club races last year.

Events in this year’s Woodlands at Furman Challenge will be Green Valley, the Carolina First Reedy River Run in March, the Greer Earth Day run in March, the Greenville Hospital System 5K in May, the Red White and Blue Shoes in July, the Michelin 5K in August, the BMW Classic in September, the Spinx Runfest in October and will culminate with the Paris Mountain Road Race in December.

Points will be awarded based on finish in age brackets, overall age and participation. The goal is to make sure everyone has the opportunity to earn points regardless of skill and age. The top male and female participants will be awarded at the end of the year. The top three finishers on the men’s side in 2011 were Lee Cook of Greer, Dann Shoaf of Anderson and Weldon Humphrey of Greenwood. The top three female finishers were Joy Bailey of Greenville, Anne Brooks of Salem and Betty Burrell of Pendelton.

The Woodlands is sponsoring the Challenge because of its commitment to healthy senior living in the Upstate. The Greenville Track Club is the state’s second-oldest running club. The club’s goal is to provide the running and fitness community with a schedule of top quality events in which area residents can reach fitness and life enrichment goals through participation or volunteering.
