City Of Spartanburg to Hold Groundbreaking for the New Stewart Park

SPARTANBURG, SC – August 3, 2011 – A groundbreaking program tocelebrate the initial improvements to Stewart Park will take place at11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at 500 Highland Avenue.

The new 8.2 acre park will include a multi-purpose athletic field,outdoor basketball courts, walking trails, playground, sprayground(water feature), picnic shelter and parking lot.  Financed by the Cityof Spartanburg, this $1,120,000 project has an anticipated completiondate of December 2011.

It was during the term of former councilmember, Honorable Lewis Millsand the encouragement of the community, that the vision to revitalizethe park began.

Mr. Leroy Jeter, Highland Neighborhood Association President states,Stewart Park, formerly Fairforest Park was once the main attraction ofthe Highland Community.  We are now on our way back to having a park ourcommunity and the City can be proud of!

States the City of Spartanburg’s Community Services Director, MitchKennedy, The City’s investment at Stewart Park is essential todevelopment of the young people of the Highland Neighborhood, while alsoadvancing the quality of life for all residents

Community leaders making remarks at the groundbreaking include MayorJunie White, Pastor Lewis Mills, Representative Harold Mitchell,Councilman Jerome Rice and Leroy Jeter, Highland NeighborhoodAssociation President.  The public is invited to attend the program.

Stewart Park is the last of a number of capital projects that wereincluded in an ambitious slate of community improvements identified byCity Council four years ago that included the new C.C. Woodson CommunityCenter, renovation of Northwest Community Center, the new Saint JohnStreet Parking Garage, Barnet Park Phase II, Renaissance ParkInfrastructure, the closure of the Arkwright Dump, and the Renovation ofthe Downtown Memorial Airport Terminal.  We are pleased that despitethe down economy, City Council’s fiscal discipline and sound planninghas allowed us to keep this important promise to the community, saidCity Manager Ed Memmott.
