Star Search Returns to Hollywild

INMAN, SC – Hollywild Animal Park is pleased to announce its first Special Event for 2011. Star Search will be held on Saturday, February 19th from 7 – 9 PM. Admission is $6 per person.
Mr. Jessie Willard and volunteers with the Foothills Astronomy Club will lead visitors of all ages on an exploration of the night sky. Modeling the techniques for those beginning to develop their interest in astronomy, the adventure will start with binoculars and progress to large stand-alone telescopes used to find details in the stars and constellations. Several telescopes will be onsite including Willard’s own 13 inch Dobson reflector model; one he explains has been easy to use during his ten years as an astronomy hobbyist.
At this time of year, participants can see many exciting deep space objects: star clusters, where there can be 10,000 or more stars in one view; the planet Uranus, over a billion miles away; double stars, which orbit one another bound by gravity; Moon craters; and Saturn’s famous rings.
“We’ve been to many area schools and kids love what they can see when they start exploring space,” Willard explained. “We encourage parents to bring their children to events like these. When a small person sees the rings around Saturn, they’re amazed.
In addition to the stars, participants will receive space exploration information and enjoy the warmth of a winter bonfire. Marshmallows and hot chocolate will be available for purchase.
