Self Regional Healthcare Becomes First in the Southeast to Treat Spine Patients Using Advanced Integrated Operating Room Technology
October 6, 2010GREENWOOD,SC – October 6, 2010 – Surgeons at Self Regional Healthcare’s SouthCarolina Spine Center in Greenwood, SC are now treating patients with avariety of spinal conditions in its new advanced surgical operatingroom (OR) featuring Brainsuite® iCT from Brainlab.
Already recognized by leading health care ratings organizationHealthGrades as a five-star rated spine program, Self Regionalcontinues its commitment to advanced spinal care by becoming the firstinstitution in the Southeast to use this highly advanced OR technology.
Neurosurgeons Dr. Michael Kilburn and Dr. Sumeer Lal have treatedmore than 30 patients using Brainsuite iCT since the advanced OR openedon July 19. The first patient was experiencing severe and radiatinglower back pain. After the surgeon performed a lumbar spinal fusioninvolving the L5 S1, the patient was able to return home after a briefhospital stay and is well on their way to a full recovery.
Integrating navigation with diagnostic quality intra-operativeimages offers tremendous benefit to our patients, noted Dr. Lal. Wecan perform with a higher level of accuracy in terms of instrumentplacement, supported by the ability to check that a surgical outcomehas been achieved prior to concluding the procedure. This advancedtechnology has taken our OR to the next level.
Brainsuite iCT is a digitally integrated OR that combinesimage-guided surgery (IGS), with a multi-slice intra-operative computedtomography scanner (iCT) and comprehensive OR data management. The CTtravels on rails over the OR table, providing high-qualityintra-operative scanning without waking the patient from anesthesia. Itdrives access to real-time imaging and enriched patient data thatsurgeons can use to make timely and informed decisions, as well asobtain pre-closure verification of results. Brainsuite iCT can be usedfor neuro, spine, ENT, cranio-maxillo-facial, trauma and orthopedicsurgeries.
With the digital data management system Brainsuite® Net, patientdata from the hospital’s Picture Archiving and Communications System(PACS) is accessible in the OR. Automatic Image Registration fromBrainlab supports instant patient registration of intra-operativeimages without the need for fiducial markers or landmark recognitionfor seamless and time-saving navigation for surgeons. The VectorVision®sky navigation platform displays patient data collected during surgeryand is equipped with two infrared cameras that verify the patient’sposition in the OR.
Self Regional Healthcare had a strong vision for integratingintra-operative imaging and advanced data management into its spinecenter. We are proud they chose to collaborate with Brainlab to makethat vision a reality for their patients, said Cameron Georges,Director, Brainlab Inc.
