Construction to Begin on Major Capital Improvement Project in Green Avenue Area
September 1, 2010Infrastructure improvements designed to support City’s ongoing community revitalization efforts
GREENVILLE, SC – September 1, 2010 – Construction is scheduled to begin on Green Avenue Phase II-B the first week of September and is expected to take approximately one year to complete. The project area includes Anderson Street, Casey Street, Green Avenue, Lafayette Street, Lincoln Street, McLeod Street and Nelson Street and will involve significant infrastructure improvements throughout the entire area.
Green Avenue Phase II-B is part of the City’s 2011-2015 Capital Improvement Program. It is also part of the continuing implementation of the Green Avenue Master Plan, which was adopted by City Council in 2002, and includes infrastructure improvements to support the rehabilitation and construction of residential units in the neighborhood. Approximately 40 single-family units will be developed in conjunction with this project.
Planned improvements include:
• The reduction of Anderson Street from five lanes to three lanes beginning in the vicinity of Lafayette Street, construction of three planted medians in the roadway and the addition of planters between the sidewalk and curb and gutter on both sides of the street• The construction of new curb and gutter on both sides of Casey Street, construction of new sidewalk on one side of the street with a two-foot curb lawn and storm drainage improvements
• The realignment of Green Avenue at its intersection with McLeod Street and Nelson Street, construction of new sidewalk on both sides of the street at the intersection and storm drainage improvements
• Construction of a new connector street between Lafayette Street and Lincoln Street nearest the railroad, construction of new sidewalk with a two-foot curb lawn and construction of new curb and gutter along Lafayette Street and on the portion of Lincoln Street that currently does not have curb and gutter
• Construction of three detention basins – two on either side of Green Avenue and one on the west side of Lafayette Street nearest the railroad
While every effort will be made to minimize the impact on area residents and motorists traveling on the affected streets throughout the course of construction, because of the extensive nature of the work that will take place, temporary road closures will be required and minor delays can be expected. Below is an overview of what residents and motorists can expect:
• Anderson Street will remain open with minor delays while construction occurs
• Casey Street will remain closed while construction occurs
• McLeod Street (from Lincoln Street to Green Avenue) and Nelson Street (from Casey Street to Green Avenue) will be closed while the intersection of Green Avenue, McLeod Street and Nelson Street is being constructed
• Green Avenue will remain open during construction with a temporary detour passing through the old Bell Furniture store property
• Lafayette Street will remain closed while construction occurs
