New vehicles part of ongoing effort to improve and enhance transit service delivery

GREENVILLE, SC – June 13, 2010 – Public Transportation Director Carl Jackson announced today that the City has taken delivery of two new buses to supplement the Greenlink fleet. The 35-foot, heavy-duty Gillig buses can carry up to 30 passengers and were purchased at a cost of $329,782 each. The City of Greenville and Greenville County each contributed $35,900 to fulfill the local match required to purchase the buses, and the remainder of the cost was paid for through a grant from the Federal Transit Administration. The new buses have a low-floor design, which allows riders to step onto the bus at curb level, and are equipped with wheelchair ramps that make boarding the vehicle much easier for disabled passengers.

According to Jackson, Greenlink’s on-time performance now exceeds 90% and ridership and revenue have increased by an average of 10% over the past two months, when compared to the same times last year. “The current fleet is cleaner and safer and better maintained, but better buses are needed,” said Jackson. “Adding two new buses will go a long way to further the quality of transit services delivered to the community.”
In keeping with its commitment to sustainability, the City is using environmentally-friendly water-based paints to customize the new buses, and like the rest of the Greenlink fleet, the buses can be powered by biodiesel fuel.
