ACC Champion Clemson Rowers to Attend Head of the Broad Regatta
August 13, 2009COLUMBIA, SC – August 13, 2009 – The Columbia Regional Sports Council is proud to announce the First Annual “Head of the Broad Invitational Regatta” hosted by the Columbia Rowing Club (CRC), Saturday, October 3, 2009 at the Richland County Rowing Facility on the Broad River. Races will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the public is invited to attend this free event. The race is being held to promote rowing in the Midlands. All proceeds from the regatta will be used to support Columbia Rowing Club Youth Rowing.
The event will feature a course measuring 4000 meters (2.48 miles) that will run north to south along the Broad River. Rowers will also participate in Sprint races of 500 meters length. Competition will include singles (one rower with two oars), doubles (two rowers with two oars each), quads (four rowers with two oars each), fours with cox (four rowers with one oar each) and eights with cox (eight rowers with one oar each).
The 2009 ACC Champion Clemson Tigers, coached by 2009 ACC Coach of the Year Richard Ruggieri, will be one of the teams rowing in this year’s inaugural event. Additional rowing clubs invited to attend include the Augusta Rowing Club, Asheville Rowing Club, and Catawba Rowing Club in Charlotte, Raptors Youth Rowing (Charleston, SC) and theCollege of Charleston.

CRC President George Park is thrilled to have the Tigers in Columbia this year stating, Having a premier crew like Clemson participate in our inaugural regatta will be a treat for rowers and spectators alike. Rarely do we have the opportunity to witness a crew of Clemson’s caliber on the water in Columbia. In addition to winning the ACC Championship in 2009, Clemson Rowing won a national championship in the Varsity 4+ boat and the team finished 12th overall at the NCAA Rowing Championships.
