1×1 Design receives AIA Columbia Design Awards

November 5, 2018

1×1 Design announced that two projects have received design recognition by the Columbia chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Columbia).

The Interior and Exterior Renovations at The Bakery at BullStreet in Columbia, South Carolina, received a Citation Award in Historic Preservation/Adaptive Reuse/Renovation.  The Bakery was first constructed in 1900 as part of the South Carolina State Hospital Campus, and was abandoned in the 1990s. The building suffered and fell into great disrepair prior to the renovations. 1×1 Design worked in conjunction with Hughes Development Corporation (Owner), SOCO (tenant) and Buchanan Construction Services (General Contractor) to pioneer the re-habitation of the historic buildings on the BullStreet Campus.

Finally, the interior renovations of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church were recognized for a Divine Detail Award.  The complete interior renovation of this historic church in downtown Columbia, included finish replacement, refurbishment of original wood floors, restoration of original stained-glass windows, and the custom application of Venetian Plaster at the chancel.  Mashburn Construction Company was the general contractor for the project.
