Midlands Technical College Dental Students Give Children Free Services

As part of the Midlands Technical College (MTC) Dental Clinic’s Smiles from the Heart event, 40 second-year Dental Hygiene students and Expanded Duty Dental Assisting students volunteered their time to give children brighter, healthier smiles.
The young patients ages 4 to 14 received free dental services such as radiographs, exams, cleanings, and fluoride treatments at the college’s dental clinic on the Airport Campus, and there are plans to provide more services to these same children in the future.
“This is such an important event as it allows our students to give back to the community providing services to children who otherwise may not receive dental care,” said Lee Muthig, Director of MTC’s Allied Dental Education programs. “It’s good for the children. It’s good for the students. Furthermore, this event allows MTC students to learn how to work with children.”
This is the fourth year MTC Allied Dental students have provided free dental services. MTC dental students started Smiles from the Heart four years ago in memory of the clinic’s former patient coordinator, Donna Griffith.
“Donna loved helping children. She was passionate that all children should be able to receive dental care,” Muthig said. “Helping children is a fitting way to honor her service.”
