47 Schools Win National School Lunch Awards, Cash Prizes

Richland One schools are winning top national awards and cash incentives for promoting healthy meals and exercise.

Forty-six Richland One schools and a charter school will be recognized as among the healthiest in the nation at a press conference and celebration on Thursday, March 29 at 3 p.m. at Burton-Pack Elementary School, 111 Garden Drive.

Representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will present the schools with banners and checks totaling $58,000 as winners of its HealthierUS Challenge School Lunch Award. The honor recognizes schools for excellence in promoting nutrition and physical activity that create healthier school environments.

Each school will receive a check of $500 as a Bronze Award winner, $1,000 as a Silver Award winner or $1,500 as a Gold Award winner. Speakers at the celebration will include Richland One Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon, Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin and representatives from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
