Army veteran returns home to create unique experience for Columbia’s youth sports

Hill Construction and Talmage Architects continue to make progress on Sonny’s SportsPlex, an indoor courts facility offering competitive league play, open gym and personal training. Not only is this a unique concept for youth sports, but its owner has special roots and dedication to his country and state.
Born and raised in Bamberg, South Carolina, army veteran Jerrod Nimmons, has come home to form an exclusive location for year-round competitive youth basketball and volleyball leagues.
“There was a time that our family would drive at least 2 hours there and back for our 6- year old son to play in a competitive basketball league. I knew eventually one day that I would get back to my roots in South Carolina and thought, why not create a place where my child can continue to flourish and compete,” explains owner Jerrod Nimmons.
Nimmons “why not” turned into a 16,000 square foot field of dreams for his son and so many other talented youth in Columbia and surrounding areas.
Located in Northeast Columbia, the sports complex will clearly fulfill a niche within the community, by providing indoor courts for private training and a unique athletic experience outside of the traditional gymnasium.
“We want to provide youth the opportunity to play on multiple competitive levels while creating an atmosphere of teamwork, dedication and hard work in the areas of basketball and volleyball,” says Nimmons.
The 16,000 square foot facility will feature two full sized courts, concession area and will offer personal training and an open gym. Court rental time for teams to practice is also available. Sonny’s is expected to open in the Spring of 2018.
