Round Top Elementary School earns national recognition

March 12, 2018

Based on a successful implementation of “The Leader In Me,” Round Top Elementary School earned “Leader In Me Lighthouse School” status. The school was commended for achieving positive school and student outcomes as well as having an extraordinary impact on staff, students, parents and the greater community.

The Leader in Me is a whole-school transformation model, developed in partnership with educators. It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.

In detailing how Round Top demonstrated the core paradigms of The Leader in Me program, the Lighthouse Status report noted: “Genius is recognized with genius displays around the school. The teachers recognize student genius and give it voice and opportunity in leadership teams” and “Body, mind, heart and spirit are addressed on a daily or weekly basis to develop students and help them to live balanced lives. The staff is very intentional with both the direct and indirect teaching of the 7 Habits.”

“I am very proud of our school, our students, our faculty and our community. We are a school full of synergy,” said Round Top Elementary Principal Jeaneen Tucker. “We have been on the “The Leader in Me” journey for four years and to have this recognition for the school is very fulfilling.”

In order to achieve this impressive goal, Round Top had to assemble a Lighthouse Team, create a leadership environment, teach and reinforce the 7 Habits, work together collaboratively, have students in meaningful leadership roles, involve parents, create and hold leadership events, use student data through leadership notebooks and other leadership tools, and show measurable
results.

Richland Two Superintendent Dr. Baron Davis said, “We applaud Round Top Elementary for achieving this great success. This designation shows Round Top’s commitment to creating, sustaining and investing in a culture and environment of excellence that supports students as they pursue their pathways to purpose.”

Round Top is the second Richland Two school to receive this honor. Sandlapper Elementary School earned the status in 2017.
